Continuous Action Planetary Mill – First Mill in the world for industrial application which actually grind!

Ultra fine grinding is among most needed and energy consuming widespread operations in many sectors of industry.

We're proud to present the first Planetary mill for fully-featured industrial application.

Planetary mills are characterized by very fast and effective grinding. They have a wide range of applications. It is ideal equipment for getting fine and ultrafine powders up to 5 micron and less. Way of grinding can be dry or wet depending on the application. The capacity range – from 50 to 5 000 kg per hour.

The drum turns around its own axis (B) with W2 speed and also around axis A witha speed W1 (as the Earth turns around the Sun - that is why the Mill is called Planetary). Due to the speed W1, inside the drum there appears a strong centrifugal fieldtenfold exceeding gravity force (in our case — it is up to 43 times more).

A possibility of getting fine powders in big quantities was first realized in Denmark.
In 1880-92 years “Schmidt & Co.” first created a ball mill (b.m.) for grinding of cement. Engineering solution realized in this mill is actual till present.
B.m. has shortcomings – big sizes, low efficiency and limited possibilities for getting ultra-fine powders.
Search of high-performance way of ultra-fine grinding led to creation of PCM.
It happened practically at the same time.
First patent for this mill was received by Mr. Wegmann in June 1889 (patent ¹405810). At the heart of the mill one has put the same principles as in b.m. But besides rotation around its own center axis, one added to the drum a rotation around axis of portable rotation (as planets go around the Sun). Grinding in a strong centrifugal field provides unlimited possibilities for getting ultra-fine powders (practically up to millimicro-level).

Difficulties, which prevented to create PCM for mass production, are common for all development engineers (relevance ranged):

    1.    Inability of regular planetary reduction gear to work long by considerable (>12g) centrifugal overloads.
    2.    Complexity of constructional solution for constant material charge and dumping.
    3.    Removal of excess heat from drums and footing.
    4.    Organization of dust removal.

At the time being working mill prototype is situated in the grinding laboratory of “Leotec” company in St. Petersburg and is used for grinding of different materials for customers from different countries.

Technology Advantages

Our PCM obviously shows its advantages in all the basic data.

For example, by grinding of the quartz sand for the class <20 mcm, our PCM power inputs (not taking into account energy for classification ) are 50 kW/t, by a Ball mill it is correspondingly >300 kW/t,
appr.500 kW/t by a Vibrational mill
and >2000 kW/t by a Jet mill

Resume of PCM advantages:

1. Compact footprint (for example, 1.5 t/h capacity is achieved with four drums five liter volume each).
Decreased size, lightweight mobile modifications of PCM.

2. Highest possible energy efficiency for production of ultra fine and nano-powders.

3. Unmatched grinding size (up to nano-level)

4. No vibration – no need for foundation.

5. Simple adaptation for production.

6. Autogenous Grinding – great potential for realization of the AG technology with various materials.

7. Versatility- our PCM mill could be operated either in dry or wet grinding process.

8. Superior Mechanical activation - The smaller size & mechanical activation leads to a variety of effects that critically change properties of many materials, creating the opportunity for re-engineering of existing products and engineering of new products with unprecedented performance levels.

9. Practically Immediate stabilization of the grinding process

10. The design could be applied either in continuous or periodical operation.

Area of powders application:

1. Enrichment of minerals

1.1. Dressing of Ore with fine ingrained elements
1.2. Dressing of diamond-bearing ore
1.3. Mechanical activation of concentrates for acceleration of the processes of chemical enrichment

2. Constructional materials of different application (cement, fillers, constructional mixes etc.)
Getting of constructional materials from industrial wastes (metallurgical slag, ashes, broken glass treatment)

2.1 Production of heavy-duty cements and concrete
